Aker American Shipping (OSE: AKASA) is a Norwegian-American shipping and shipyard company and part of the Aker Group with Aker ASA owning 53.4% of the company. The company ownes the shipyard Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and the shiping company American Shipping Corporation (ASC). ASC will operate ten bareboat charters under the Jones Act. Aker American Shipping is listed on Oslo Stock Exchange and has it's headquarter in Oslo, Norway.
The US Jones Act requires all water transport between US ports to be operated by US flag ships and requires again US flag ships to be build in US shipyards, to be owned by US citizens and be operated by American crew. Aker American Shipping is an attempt to enter this marked.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, originally Kværner Philadelphia Shipyard, was a private-public cooperation to resurrect the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard that was closed in 1995 and reopened in 1996. After the acquisition of Kværner Aker took over the ownership of the yard.
