Akaria Base

Akaria Base is an outpost in the fictional Star Trek universe. It is the location of the Remmler Array - which is used to remove baryon particles that accumulate on starships over time. The base was featured in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Starship Mine.

In 2369, the USS Enterprise-D came to Akaria Base to undergo a sweep to remove the baryon particles. The ship had a high concentration of warp particles due to the higher than normal number of hours spent in warp speed.

The ship was totally evacuated of the crew and other life forms. The senior staff was invited to a reception at the base. Worf managed to get himself excused from the reception. A six person technical team came on board just before the sweep to make the final preparations.

When Captain Jean-Luc Picard went back to the ship to get his saddle, he found that the technical team sent aboard to conduct final preparations was actually a band of thieves. They had gone on board to steal some trilithium resin from the ship. The resin was a highly unstable and explosive compound produced by the ship that could be used as a weapon. The thieves were planning to sell the resin to some terrorists.

It was found out that the Akaria Base administrator Mr. Orton and his assistant were co-conspirators. When Geordi La Forge found a cache of weapons at the base, La Forge, Commander Riker, Deanna Troi, Doctor Crusher and Commander Data were taken hostage.

The senior staff was finally able to outsmart their captors and take them prisoner. Kelsey - the leader of the band - was able to escape from the ship, but Picard had removed the control rod from the canister containing the trilithium resin. Her ship did not get very far before being destroyed in a violent explosion. The sweep was shut down before it could kill Picard. The Enterprise was powered up, the crew returned, and soon departed Akaira Base.

It is not known if the Enterprise was the only ship that the thieves tried to steal trilithium resin from. It is possible that other ships had the resin stolen from their reactors without the crew even knowing that the theft had occurred. No doubt security procedures were reexamined and improved after the Enterprise swept was done.
