The Club?
The club is becoming increasingly well known for its success in the Yorkshire Leagues and Cup competitions, the latter being its 2 recent promotions and two cup finals. The thrilling mixture of players of all ages and young coaching staff makes rugby at Aireborough modern and exciting, this reflecting in its recent and ongoing success. The up-coming junior section is also growing steadily each year and the club soon hopes to have teams in all age-groups.
Level:
The first team, who’ll play in Yorkshire Division 3 during the 2006/07 season, will be facing well established Yorkshire sides such as Skipton, Yarnbury and Baildon. The second team playing in the corresponding merit league also enjoy some reasonably serious rugby, many of the players challenging for first team positions. Finally, the third and veterans sides play regular matches all of which are friendlies.
Social:
It isn’t all about the rugby as the club prides itself on it social side, much of this to do with the social committee better known as the ‘Arses’\(Aireborough Rugby Select Entertainment Society). Aireborough’s pantomimes, dinner dances and musical events to name but a few have become legendary around the local town of Guiseley, and, anybody wishing to join the club should expect to be welcomed into the setup straight away if they wish!
Coaching Staff:
The club has two main senior club coaches. Head Coach Simon Carbutt who played for the RAF and gained junior county honours mainly played national league rugby with Harrogate, Headingley, Nottingham and Newark, he is still playing prop for the first team as a player coach. Simon is joined by assistant club coach Tony Smith who formally played for Newcastle Gosforth and Keighley Coughars as well as England Students, Tony also played professional rugby and still plays for the club.
History:
Old Airebronians were formed by former pupils of Aireborough Grammar School in 1970. In 1991, the closure of the school saw a change of name to Aireborough RUFC. Once in 1994 when they defeat Ossett in a re-match and the second time last season with a game against league opponents Hullensians.
