Aidan Haldane (Daniel Draper)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Aidan Haldane was a hereditary Prince of Gwynedd and the sole Haldane survivor of the Festillic coup of 822. He was a direct descendant of King Aidan Haldane, the second King of Gwynedd.

Aidan Augarin Ifor Haldane was born on February 9, 820, the fourth son of King Ifor Haldane and Queen Nuala Udaut. The rest of his family was killed in the Festillic coup of 822, leaving Aidan as the sole Haldane heir to the throne of Gwynedd. Aidan was smuggled out of the palace during the chaos of the coup by a servant named Jasper Draper. Jasper raised Aidan as his own son, giving him the name Daniel Draper to protect the prince's identity, and moving the family to Valoret. Aidan lived the rest of his life as a common merchant in Valoret, never revealing his true identity or making any attempts to retake his family's throne. However, he did get married and produce a legal heir, Prince Alroy, thus securing the Haldane succession for another generation. Aidan lived a long life as Daniel Draper, outliving both his wife and son. On his deathbed in 903, Aidan finally revealed his true identity to his physician, the Healer Rhys Thuryn, an act that would eventually lead to the Haldane Restoration. Prince Aidan Haldane died on September 27, 903, at the age of 83.
