Ahmet Yumrukaya

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahmet Yumrukaya, born 1984 in İstanbul, Turkey, is a Turkish rower competing in the lightweight coxless pair category.

He is one of the first two Turkish rowers to win a world championship title in history. Yumrukaya and his teammate İhsan Emre Vural took first place in the lightweight men's coxless pair event in the 2004 Under 23 World Championships held in Poznań, Poland.

He participated in the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería, Spain and won bronze medal with his teammate İhsan Emre Vural.

He is not to be confused with his namesake, the one-time Brussels correspondent of Turkey's Dünya newspaper who, dressed in a commando outfit together with three other accomplices, kidnapped Belgo-Turkish businessman Eray Serimözü from his house in Auderghem in September 2005 and held him captive for eight days before being arrested by the police, the whole affair apparently having to do with the recuperation of a sum of money Serimözü owed Vural Öger, prominent German Turkish businessman and member of the European Parliament. Vural Öger denied having had any knowledge of (that) Ahmet Yumrukaya's actions and Yumrukaya is currently serving time in a Belgian jail.
