[edit] The First Film
In the first film, his MIB career starts out when he runs down an alien on foot. When MIB Agent K notices his potential, he recruits him into the MIB. At first, James is suspicious, but he decides to join. He is registered as Agent J. He begins to dislike Kay when he calls him sport, son or slick, but gets used to it. He and Kay's first mission is to stop an alien bug from leaving Earth with a tiny galaxy before the alien owners disintegrate the planet. During the final confrontation with the bug, Kay is swallowed by it in an attempt to get his gun back, leaving Jay to keep him on Earth. When he starts squishing cockroaches, the bug attacks him, but before it can kill him, Kay shoots it from the inside. When Kay requests to be neuralyzed, Jay fulfills the request and his new partner is a former morgue worker who becomes known as Agent L.
[edit] MIB II
In the second film, L wanted to return to the morgue and has been neuralyzed, and J has gained a reputation for neuralyzing all of his partners for unsuitability to work at MiB. When he is sent to get Kay back to face a new threat to which only he had details of locked away in his mind, Jay's temporary partner is an alien disguised as a (talkative) pug, Frank. When Kay is de-neuralyzed, Jay is once again the rookie.
[edit] Trivia
- His real name used to be James Darrell Edwards III, and he used to be a NYPD detective. When he joined the MIB, the records of his name were deleted and what was left was the letter J.
- Chris O'Donnell and David Schwimmer were both offered the role of J before Will Smith accepted the role.
