African American Theme House
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The African American Theme House is a student housing cooperative in Berkeley, California that is part of the University Students Cooperative Association. The house is located close to the University of California at Berkeley near Memorial Stadium and the International House. The house is not only open to African American students, and its members promote the theme by doing community service and hosting student group events. The building was originally the Slavic house for the University of California, Berkeley and the University Students Cooperative Association bought the house in 1997 and converted it to an African American themed cooperative.
The African American Theme House is one of two themed houses in the University Students Cooperative Association. This house offers a place to live on the UC Berkeley campus where African American culture is embraced. Celebrations like Black History Month and Kwanzaa are a part of what make the African American Theme House unique on the UC Berkeley campus. The African American themed fraternities on the UC Berkeley campus do not have houses, which makes the African American Theme House cooperative special. Another African American themed housing option sponsored by the University of California is the Afro Floor, which is a floor in the student dormitories that is African American themed.
