Afghan Transitional Administration

[edit] Introduction

The Afghan Transitional Administration was an interim governmental body established in mid-2002 under US auspices to govern Afghanistan in the wake of the 2001 US-led coalition defeat of the Taliban regime and the resulting power vacuum. It was set up in June and July of 2002. It has been replaced with the election of a permanent government in 2004.

Elections were held on 9th October 2004, to decide upon a leader of the new government. As expected there was some extreme Islamist resistance to the voting in of a new democratic government. A strong turnout at the polls suggested, to many observers, promise for the country's democratic future.
