AFC Leopards are a football club based in Nairobi, Kenya. They are one of the two most popular Kenyan football clubs (the other being local rivals Gor Mahia). AFC Leopards have won the Kenyan football league 12 times and the Kenyan cup five times. The club was formed in 1964 as Abaluhya FC when anumber of small clubs amalgamated [1]. The name was changed to AFC Leopards in 1980, when the Kenyan government banned tribal names (Abaluhya refers to the Luhya tribe). The home ground of the club is Nyayo Stadium. Like many other traditional Kenyan clubs, AFC Leopards are now in severe financial difficulties due to mismanagement. They currently play in the Kenyan Premier League, but were among the bottom teams during the 2005-2006 season.
Soccer fans in the country blame the Kenya Football Federation for mismanaging soccer in the country. The poor showing by private clubs is also blamed on the decision by corporate companies to start their own football clubs rather than sponsoring existing ones. Despite these shortcomings AFC Leopards remain a popular club especially among the Luhya community of Kenya's western province
