From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aegis School of Telecommunication started a one-year Master's Program in Telecommunication Management (MPTM) in 2002, with support from Bharti (aka AirTel - a leading telecommunications firm in India). The program is designed along the lines of Oklahoma State University's Masters Program in Telecommunication Management (MSTM). The objective is of to develop Telecom Leaders who understand the telecom sector not only from technological point of view but from management and regulatory perspective as well. These future leaders will be capable of performing the tasks across functional areas in the complex industry landscape.

Telecom is the most happening and challenging field today. In next five years almost $20bn (90,0000 cr) investment will be made in this industry. Recently, John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, announced of $1bn investment in India. Organizations like Bharti, Nortel, Cisco, Reliance, and Nokia are aggressively investing and recruiting trained manpower. There is growing demand for professionls who can take care of this complex industry.

Due to the age of curriculum, non-availability of teaching faculty, highly restrictive and regulated environment, the engineering colleges are not able to produce the skilled manpower. The telecom industry is reluctant to recruit the fresh engineers due to high cost involved in retraining process. So you will find mostly software companies visiting engineering colleges for campus placement.

The Masters Program in Telecommunication is designed to bridge the gap between what industries requires and what the engineering graduates know. We prepare our MPTM students for next generation leadership challenge in the most complex and dynamic Telecom and information technology industry. At present the industry needs persons who understand the "big picture" – the technical nitty-gritty's and the managerial aspects. The needs of industry are shifting away from traditional functional specialization to a more generalist problem-solver model. The graduates are expected to have not only business knowledge in general, but also to be technically skilled to contribute to the specific industry domain immediately upon graduation. In long term, such graduates may opt for a technical career path or a more business-oriented path.
