Aecb

AECB is the leading United Kingdom-based network for sustainable building professionals:

"The Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) was established in 1989 to increase awareness within the construction industry of the need to respect, protect, preserve and enhance the environment, principles that have become known collectively as "sustainability". The Association numbers local authorities, housing associations, builders, architects, designers, consultants and manufacturers among its membership"

The AECB is currently focusing on trying to help the UK reduce its CO2 emissions related to domestic buildings(almost 30% of UK CO2 emissions - excluding flying - relate to domestic buildings). The AECB is developing its‘carbon literate’ design and construction programme (Carbon-Lite)to this end:

Constructive criticism of the programme from a broad range of interested individuals would be gratefully received - via the AECB web site.

This extract from AECB web site illustrates this development within the green building movement:

“AECB members share a broad green vision which has informed our personal approaches to the design of buildings and their environs. Climate change now threatens to overwhelm all the good work that we have achieved with respect to making buildings more sustainable and the construction industry more ethical. Whilst all aspects of sustainability are very important, the AECB has recognised that CO2 emissions from buildings – being 50% of all UK emissions (excluding air travel) – have to be the AECB’s main priority within the holistic approach that is sustainable design”

Sustainable design is, of course, a rapidly evolving discipline and the outstanding work to date of AECB members can only be improved through the CarbonLite programme, which is aimed at refining and enhancing our sustainable design skills in the area in which they are currently the weakest: energy performance.
