The ADtranz low floor tram were introduced in the 1990's as the world's first low floor trams with full length low floors. This tram was developed by MAN for the city transport company of Bremen. The prototype, tram couple 3801, was publicly shown on 9 February 1990. In the period 1991-1993 it was tested in many European cities. Ten German cities have purchased this type. Adtranz had taken over the rail-division of MAN in 1990. The normal version was named GT6N or GT8N and the metre gauge version were frequently called GT6M.

ADtranz low floor trams exist in lengths of three or four carbody sections which have approximately the same length. Under each carbody section lies a bogie but the low floor constrains the bogie's movement. Of the two assen it is operated by a electric motor which is linked by means of a Universal joint with the bogie truck. Characteristic to this tram is swerving in curves, which requires a special track layout. This happens if the first or hindmost carbody section drive by an arc and drags the other two barges (on the straight track) in its movement.

The response of the Adtranz's second generation trams did not sell well in the market. only Munich and Nuremberg ordered this type. Except renewed at the latest, also a larger distance between the assen knows to this material (2 meters instead of 1.85 meter) so that the leg space of is based on above the bogie trucks increased could become. Another difference is, which there here really talk is not of 4 a tram (as that to Bremen it is provided), but earlier of double 2 a tram. In the middle, the articulation has been lengthened and redisigned, so that the movements of the first and hindmost two parts no longer can influence each other. Because of this swinging the carbody section is limited at - and driving out the arcs.

When Bombardier Transportation bought Adtranz, the ADtranz low floor tram was removed form the catalogue. 460 Trams have been built for the city transport companies of Augsburg (12), Berlin (150), Braunschweig (12), Bremen (79), Frankfurt an of the oder (8), Jena (33), Kumamoto (5), Mainz (16), Munich (93), Nuremberg (40) and Zwickau (12). On the small tramnet in the Swedish city Norrköping have done ninety four second-hand Adtranz-trams services since the end of the years. It goes out for the prototype Bremen (tram 3801) and three carriages Munich.
