Admiral Komack
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Admiral Komack is a character of the Star Trek universe who holds the distinction of being the first Admiral to ever appear in a Star Trek production. Komack is mentioned in This Side of Paradise and first seen in the Star Trek Original Series episode "Amok Time".
In "Amok Time", Admiral Komack makes a single appearance via long range communications speaking to Captain James T. Kirk on a viewscreen. Komack appears to be wearing a gold command shirt but, as only the upper portion of his body is visible, his rank insignia as a Starfleet Admiral remains unseen. Admiral Komack’s name is mentioned at the end of the episode, when an order is transmitted to the Starship Enterprise advising Captain Kirk that permission is given to divert to the planet Vulcan.
In the episode "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" an admiral appears, but is not named. Although the script gives his name as Westervliet, he was played by Byron Morrow, and so may have been a reappearance of Admiral Komack.
Apart from these two episodes, admirals were only seen in another two episodes of the Original Series. In most other episodes where Kirk reports to a flag officer, it was usually a commodore.
Unofficial sources, including comments from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, indicate that Admiral Komack's first name may have been "Barry" although this was never confirmed in the episode "Amok Time".
Admiral Komack was played by actor Byron Morrow, who died on May 11, 2006.
Admiral Komack was named for James Komack, director of "A Piece of the Action".
