The ADF-01 Falken is a fictional fighter aircraft in the games Ace Combat 2, Ace Combat 5, Ace Combat Zero, and Ace Combat X.
Due to its popularity, plastic models of the plane from Ace Combat 5 are on sale in Japan.
The ADF-01 first appeared as a non-playable enemy aircraft, piloted by the Z.O.E. Commander Ace Pilot, in the game Ace Combat 2. It appeared in the 22nd level "Fighter's Honor" and in the bonus model viewer.
Largely ignored in the ensuing two games, the Falken made a comeback in Ace Combat 5 as an unlockable playable aircraft slightly modified from its first incarnation. Since then, the Falken is poised to become a flagship super aircraft for the Ace Combat series.

[edit] Aircraft Configuration
The Falken is different from any other vehicle in Ace Combat games. The Falken has forward-swept wings, canards, inward-inclined tailrudders, a ventral rudder, and extended engine nacelles with 2-D thrust vectoring.
While these aspects of the plane affect its maneuverability, a completely enclosed cockpit that utilizes cameras instead of a plastic or glass canopy, aka coffin mode, gives the pilot full 360-degree field of view via the cockpit's numerous monitors.
Another unique aspect of the Falken's design is its payload storage. While missiles are carried in conventional "stealth-like" wells along the sides of the engine nacelles, its TLS special weapon is contained behind and below the cockpit. When the weapon is armed, the entire front of the plane splits along the horizontal axis and moves out of the way for the laser's beam. Ace Combat Zero retains this special payload storage for the TLS but uses pylons if other special weapons are used. In Ace Combat Zero, there weapons recharge time extends past its firing time, but, in Ace Combat 5, the recharge time is much shorter. Thus, it can be fired immediately after the first blast ends.
The ADF-01 has in-flight refueling capabilities.
The Falken somewhat resembles the Delphinus series of aircraft from Ace Combat 3, which with similar features such as a peculiar tailplane and no cockpit windows. The Delphinus-2 appears to be most similar, almost resembling the front half of the Falken with its laser deployed. It may be that the Falken's design was adapted into these new futuristic aircraft somewhere between Ace Combats 5 and 3.
Unlike its later brethren, the ADF-01 in Ace Combat 2 carries backwards-firing missiles as a defensive countermeasure and will regularly execute a Cobra maneuver, stopping in midair to make the player overshoot.
[edit] Unlocking the Falken
The Falken is unlocked in Ace Combat 5 by destroying semi-hidden hangar facilities in levels 12A, 12B, 16A, 16B, and 27. To unlock the plane in Ace Combat Zero, the player must obtain all three "Supreme" medals (Supreme Mercenary, Supreme Soldier, Supreme Knight). If the player has Ace Combat 4 and/or 5 save data (on the same memory card that conatins the player's Ace Combat Zero save data), the requirement is relaxed to simply completing the Campaign in Mercenary, Soldier, and Knight styles. If your Ace Combat 4 or 5 is bought in USA your Ace Combat Zero also has to be bought there, same for Europe. Earning the aircraft for Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception is especially difficult, because the player must do two tasks: first, the player must have cleared every mission version in the game (there are two versions for thirteen of the fifteen missions, and three versions for the remaining two, for a total of twenty-nine branches) and complete the thirtieth mission, only playable once the aforementioned mission clearing has been completed, called Operation X. In it, four Falkens are the last targets of a gauntlet of fighters, and liberally use their TLS and missiles to attack the player. Since the TLS is so powerful, the player is at a great disadvantage (but to make it fair the FALKENs hardly use the TLS and it is easy to dodge if the player can avoid from long distences). To earn the Falken, the player must defeat the flight of four.
[edit] Paint schemes
It comes in one paint scheme in Ace Combat 2, three in Ace Combat 5, and five in Ace Combat Zero. All three games share the red "Z.O.E." color scheme, and Ace Combat 5 contains a black "Razgriz" theme as well as a blue camouflage version. Ace Combat Zero, however, has the normal, Mercenary, Soldier, Knight, and Special paint schemes. The special color is the Razgriz black color. To unlock the special paint scheme for this aircraft, complete Ace Combat Zero on the ace difficulty level.
