The Adelaide Medical Students' Society (AMSS) was founded in 1889 to represent and protect the interests of medical students studying at Adelaide University. Since these early and historical beginnings the AMSS has grown impressively and exists today, over a century later, as the primary body of medical student representation at Adelaide University.

The AMSS currently represents over eight hundred student members that span all six years of the MBBS degree. The AMSS supports its members on an academic, social and political level. This is achieved via the Society’s affiliation with the Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA), Sponsors, Medical School staff and most importantly its strong links with the medical student body itself.

The AMSS organises an extensive program of academic and social events for its members each year. These events are extremely popular and are an integral and important part of a student’s life during their university career.

The AMSS also produces its own quarterly publication. 'Stimulus' is written and edited by the AMSS publications department. Over a thousand copies of each edition are distributed among members, Sponsors and a wide variety of faculty staff and doctors. Stimulus contains articles that focus on relevant political, academic and social events of student interest. It is a tremendously popular publication and each new issue creates great excitement amongst members. 'Stimulus' offers Sponsors a vehicle to regularly reach medical students with information about new products, services and upcoming events.

The AMSS charity activities are as equally extensive as its student orientated programs. The AMSS is the founding sponsor of the Florey Medical Research Foundation, whose namesake, Baron Howard Florey, was a past member of the AMSS Committee. In 1998, the AMSS was rewarded with Gold Sponsorship status from the Foundation in recognition of its consistent efforts with fundraising. In 2001 alone, the AMSS raised over $7000 during its annual ‘Florey Badge Day’. The AMSS also raises money for the Australian Kidney Foundation on an annual basis, and more recently has supported childhood leukaemia research through Rotary International. The on-going support of medical research has been a major objective of the AMSS throughout its history and this spirit certainly continues today.

The AMSS has a firm tradition of medical student support and community involvement that spans an impressive history. The development, aims and progress of the Society are well reflected through its motto: Traditio, Spiritus, Gaudium - Tradition, Spirit, Good Times.

The AMSS is also involved in organising the '2007 AMSA Convention' - where over 1000 medical students from all over Australia will converge on Adelaide for a week of academic and social events.
