An acronym (Greek ακρον, akron, "tip" + ονυμα, onyma, "name") is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of words.
An acronym is a word made out pieces of words in a phrase. They are not found before the 20th century in English. For example: FORTRAN = "FORmula TRANslation", COBOL="COmmon Business Oriented Language".
