[edit] Group History
The University of Kentucky acoUstiKats were founded by Dr. Jefferson Johnson in 1993, shortly after his arrival to the UK School of Music. After originally being an eight- to twelve-man ensemble for its founding years, the group has grown to sixteen men in TTBB voicing (four per part).
[edit] Group Description
The group consists of music and non-music majors from across many disciplines. The Kats must be academically astute as they also participate in one or more of the other University choral ensembles. Generally considered to be the among the top collegiate a cappella ensembles in the country, the acoUstiKats perform for numerous events throughout the year and are often featured at high profile events, including approximately 50-60 gigs per year. Notable performances of the past few years include an annual spotlight in the Rosemary Clooney Festival in Maysville, Kentucky, a highlight concert at the KMEA annual conference, and a featured performance with the UK Men's Chorus at the 2006 MENC National Convention. Aside from the high clout of these gigs, the most notable gig for the men is undoubtly the annual rounds to serenade for the sororities on campus.
