Talk:Ace Young
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Religion
Is there a reference for him being Jewish? —Fleminra 19:15, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
- He's not Jewish. Someone once edited his page so as to say that, but that was an error. Whomever stated that probably confused him with Elliott Yamin, another contestant this season, who is, indeed, Jewish. —Michael 15:09, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- His mother is devout LDS (Mormon). His father is not. I think at least one of the brothers is active LDS, but not sure about that. Ace attended Mormon services growing up, but was never baptized because he said he was waiting for his dad to join--obviously never happened. What his beliefs are now, I don't know. Kay Young remains a very active member of the LDS church in Boulder.

[edit] Blue eyed soul?
Considering Ace worked some R&B with Tha Villain's rap, and they released some CD's together, and that Ace is white, would make him a blue-eyed soul. Chantessy 12:36, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blackwell or Young?
I'm confused - Is Ace's last name Blackwell or Young? His IMDB page states the last name 'Blackwell'. Is there any confirmation over what his real last name is? -Fanficgurl 10:40, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- It's "Young." You can find references to his brothers, Josh, Duff, Ryan, and Marc around the web, all with that name. —Fleminra 18:18, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Tha Villian
Please note that the artist that Young sings backup for is "Tha Villian", not "Tha Villain". Michael 00:23, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Irish-German
I don't think the current reference qualifies as a reliable source but until Ace talks about his Irish-German heritage in a major news market, it will do for now. -User:Arual
- He did...There was an interview. I'll look for it. He commented that although he's a German-Irish white boy, people tell him he has soul...something to that effect... Michael 03:44, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- I've been looking on the Internet, but I cannot find the interview. There was only one, and he briefly referenced it. I suppose those sites have been taken down since the show ended, or perhaps they have updated them with more current information. I'll inquire elsewhere to see if I can find a site that still mentions it, but there were quite a few a matter of weeks ago, incorporating direct quotes from an interview with Ace. Michael 05:40, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- To my understanding, it was mentioned in online articles which are no longer available (back in March or early April), but there was an itnerview in AI magazine, where it was mentioned. If I can get info. from someone on that magazine, how can we cite it? Michael 06:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
- I found this. This is what he said on the matter: "No one really sounds like me. I'm German-Irish but for some reason I have soul in me. I've always had it - ever since I was a kid. So I'm bringing my spirit and my heart because every song I sing, I'm telling a story." Michael 06:33, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Boulder vs Denver vs LA
In this one interview he said Boulder; In these interviews (text) (video) he said Denver; and the visual chyron graphic says Los Angeles. What the..??
Currently resides in Los Angeles. As for Colorado, since Denver and Boulder are close enough and since Boulder is almost a town within Denver, we're using Denver on Wikipedia as his hometown like on American Idol.com. -User:Arual
[edit] Controversy
I'm about to delete this section. It may have been "big" while it was happening but now it just seems irrelevant to his career, and it's very minor and nothing compared to other AI controversies. This is just a warning, a heads up, this section may be deleted if no one objects. -User:Arual
[edit] GA failed
For the following reasons:
- First of all, too many lists.
- Secondly, a time line for the S-F section isn't really encyclopedic.
- Trivia section should be removed as per WP:NOT.
- Section Discography, uhhh who released the first and the last albums?
- He doesn't have a contract that there could be info about?
- Funny, he is based in two places (he can cut himself in half or what)?
- Asa, and has always been called Ace., says who?
- Members of the mormon church but we don't have access to the last name of his parents (would they be mentioned it would look nicer).
- He had a website, acemusic.com, to assist with a music career. is not encyclopedic.
- He has been working voluntarily in the Children's Hospital of Denver, entertaining hospital-bound patients every Christmas circa 1999. means he started in '99 or he was working there as of '99?
- References should be after the punctuation.
- Sections AI and AI performances should be combined. Lincher 03:06, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- His parents have the same last name as him. Can someone think of a good way to work that in Their names have been stated with the surname "Young" on many occasions. I suppose some sources should just be listed to back these facts up. Michael 04:17, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- Feeling all expressed concerns have been met, I have re-submitted this article for GA standing. Michael 05:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Asa or Ace?
This is confusing. From my impression he doesn't think of "Ace" as a nickname, but as a given name he has had his whole life. One fansite claims "Ace" is on his birth cert but won't give any details. User:Arual 23:52, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
- His birth name is Brett Asa Young. Asa was his grandfather's name, but he was called Ace. Likewise, the same has applied to Ace. His real middle name is Asa, but he goes by Ace, much in the style of his grandfather's name. Michael 23:54, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
I know that, but, do we know that for sure? Where's the reference? User:Arual 00:15, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- The references don't seem to be around for most of the sources on the Idol contestants. This, like many other things, was in an article that was deleted. I know that is his name, though. I'll look for a quote when I get the chance. Michael 02:55, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Photograph
Can someone invest in getting another photograph since the second was deleted? Thanks. Michael 07:47, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
- It hasn't been deleted but I agree, Wikipedia needs a better photograph than the AI pic. User:Arual 16:24, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, there used to be two. We have had the one that is currently up, but there also used to be the one of Chris Daughtry with Ace, which was deleted. Michael 20:36, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] American Idol performances
Due to how recent AI was, it seems trivial and compromising to delete the performance section. Does anyone know of a good method of breaking it down into the AI section of the article so as to further work on preparing this article for re-submission as a GA? Michael 03:58, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- Use a table? User:Arual 16:25, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hmmm...That's a good idea. Do you know how to make one that could include this info.? Michael 04:18, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

March 28 | 2000s | "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" | Train |
Jackson said it was the wrong song choice for him and he sang it badly. Abdul was also disappointed with the song choice but said he sang well, nonetheless. She pointed out Young's scar. He said it was from playing basketball when he tripped and fell on a bar that was supposed to hold a tree up, the bar bent down with him and narrowly missed his larynx. Cowell said the performance was not a great vocal and "quite karaoke," and was not impressed. Young was one of the bottom 3 contestants, along with McPhee and Tucker.
April 4 | Country | "Tonight I Wanna Cry" | Keith Urban |

April 11 | Queen | "We Will Rock You" | Queen |
Young also received mixed reviews. Abdul liked the performance, though she mentioned it was a bit pitchy at times, Jackson thought it was OK, and Cowell did not like it, "I think it was a complete and utter mess. It didn't work—it was all over the place. You were forgetting your words. I mean, it was 'We Will Rock You Gently'. I really, really, really hated that." Young was one of the bottom 3 contestants, along with Yamin and Covington.
April 18 | The Great American Songbook | "That's All" | Various Artists |
For this performance, Young had his hair tied back and was dressed up in a McQueen designer suit. Jackson commented that Young stumbled in the middle, but did well overall. Abdul commented how much she liked the "new Ace" and called it "a magical night." Cowell said "it wasn't bad," but while he said the middle was a bit nasally, he called the performance "charming." The following night Young was placed in the "bottom three" with Daughtry and Bennett and was eliminated. |
[edit] Trivia
This is trivia from the article that I am sticking here until I integrate that of it which is worthwhile into the body of the article:
- He lists (Prince), Michael Jackson and Mel Tormé as some of his favorite musical artists.
- Keira Knightley is his celebrity crush.
- Appeared on Tom Green's Tom Green Live Show at tomgreen.com
- He appeared at the DVD premiere of High School Musical and the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Michael 06:04, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Music style
Someone introduced a section on this, and another person attempted to reduce the POV, but it still looks like its a little opinionated or generalizing with the comments on the fans. Michael 20:26, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- You can take out the entire section, or find references. (I was going to delete the thing myself instead of decreasing the POV.)
It's nearly the same concept as the Taylor Hicks article's criticism section.User:Arual 21:02, 5 August 2006 (UTC)- Never mind just delete it. Fancruft vandalism. User:Arual 21:03, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Okay. Michael 21:06, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- Never mind just delete it. Fancruft vandalism. User:Arual 21:03, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Career
The career section is a bit loaded. I don't know...Many of the things in there are just hobbies. Does anyone agree? Michael 21:10, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. Some of it is superfluous. User:Arual 16:22, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
The hobbies can be rephrased and mentioned in early years. One source says he was a boy scout, so that can be mentioned as well. User:Arual 12:23, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- I see, it's in personal life. But he probably started those things in his formative years. User:Arual 12:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] GA
Please list any changes you still see that must be made. I know the AI list needs to be eliminated for re-submission, but how can this be done without harming this article's integrity?
- Any final concerns? Michael 06:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
- It passed through. Michael23:27, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fan sites
Technically, we're only supposed to add fan sites if they are officially endorsed by the person the article is about, otherwise that is vanity. For that reason, I'm just listing the fan from the article here. Please do not reinstate them:

[edit] Good article - pass
As much as Ace Young personally horrifies me, the article about him hits all 6 good article criteria square on the head. Great job folks!--Esprit15d 12:39, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you, Esprit15d. Michael 15:23, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Charity organization
I noticed he has started Highrollers With Heart with his family, friends, and fans. Like the Bubel Aiken Foundation, if HWH is a legitimate charity and not a rip-off fundraising scam to promote an entertainment career, it can have an article on Wikipedia. As for the Ace Young article, a section on the charitable work can also be added. Shimmera 18:06, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- When I find a non-fansite reliable source, I will create one. —pink moon1287 14:17, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Performances
I just wrote in all the list of performances to the article section on the Idol show. Kind of like how it is on Bianca Ryan and Carrie Underwood pages. Now there doesn't need to be a long list of songs. Pink moon1287 23:16, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
