Acer capillipes |
Acer capillipes, commonly known as Kyushu Maple or the Red Snakebark Maple, is a maple in the same taxonomic section as other Snakebark Maples such as A. pensylvanicum, A. davidii and A. rufinerve. It is native to mountainous regions in Japan, mainly Honshu and Shikoku island.
[edit] Characteristics
The various species of snakebark maples are easily distinguished from other maples by bark patterned with vertical green stripes alternating with stripes of light gray or white, sometimes with a blueish tone. Acer capillipes may be distinguished from some of its close cousins by the additional presence of small, rust-orange spots on the bark.[1]
The Kyushu Maple grows up to about 10 m (33 feet) and typically has multiple trunks. The leaves are 6-10 cm (2.5-4 inches) wide, usually three-lobed but sometimes five-lobed, and are distinctively serate. Its racemes of small cream-colored flowers are usually produced with male racemes and female racemes on different branches.[2]
The samaras of A. capillipes are small with short wings. It is easily grown from seed and usually does not hybridize with related species.
