The source is at the Mount Asahi (旭岳, Asahi dake). It runs eastward in mountains by Shirakawa. From Shirakawa it goes northward. This valley is the Nagadōri (中通り, “central street”) part of Fukushima Prefecture. Many small-to-medium-sized cities have developed in the valley: Shirakawa, Sukagawa, Kōriyama and Fukushima. Crossing the north edge of the long but low Abukuma hills, Abukuma River enters the Miyagi Prefecture. Kakuda and Iwanuma are cities by the riverside. It makes the rivermouth to the Pacific Ocean between Iwanuma and Watari.
