ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation logos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ABS-CBN had been using 2 versions of the prototype logo. The first is the vertical one, in which the prototype logo is much emphasized. Underneath it is the initials "ABS-CBN". The second is the horizontal one, in which ABS-CBN is spelled vertically. However, the prototype logo is squeezed in between "ABS" and "CBN". The horizontal arrangement is often times used to distinguish regional programming.

Below is a chronoligical timeline of the evolution of the ABS-CBN logo.

[edit] DZAQ-TV3

Before the formal merger of Alto Broadcasting System and Chronicle Broadcasting Network, DZAQ-TV3 was recognized as ABS-CBN by displaying the separate logos of ABS and CBN.

[edit] Pre-merger logo

Prior to the signing of the memorandum of agreement, Alto Broadcasting System and Chronicle Broadcasting Network made an experimental logo, combining their company's initials together.

[edit] Post-merger logo

In 1957, the memorandum of agreement between ABS and CBN was signed only at a piece of table napkin. Also, to that same table napkin, the prototype logo was sketched. The logo had two components CB- the three circles - which represents the Philippine islands of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao - which signifies its aim to eventually be able to broadcast on a nationwide scope; and, the vertical wand enclosed in a box which signifies the ABS and CBN's transmitter.

As ABS-CBN started to broadcast in full color on 1966, it displayed the colorful Sarimanok logo. Eventually, the Sarimanok (a legendary Muslim rooster) was added to the prototype logo as an accent.

It soon became the network's corporate identity, even if it was forced to shut down operations in 1972. It remained as both the company and station identity until 1998.

[edit] Post-Marcos logo

When ABS-CBN came back on air on 1986, the station needed to re-brand itself to catch up with the other networks. The station was ranking last among the 5 Metro Manila networks. So in 1987, ABS-CBN branded itself as The Star Network. The prototype logo was annexed by a stylized number 2, which stands for "Channel 2".

[edit] Pre-millenium logo

In 1999, ABS-CBN decided to give the logo a new look, yet maintaining its prototype ensign. The box that encloses the circles and the vertical wand was removed. A light gray background emphasized the prototype ensign. The typeface for ABS-CBN was also changed.

[edit] Special versions of the logo

ABS-CBN released a number of special versions of its logos since 1953.
