It is a documentary history of the changing attitudes of white Australians towards the indigenous peoples of Australia and covers the period from convict settlement (1697) to 1973. The documents are drawn from contemporary newspapers, court reports, government papers, private journals and lectures. They illustrate the whole range of white Australian attitudes, from fear, contempt, paternalism, anthropological fascination, guilt and barbarism to genuine attempts to help. This is a reference for anyone wishing to understand the realities underlying the many questions to be asked about the situation of Aborigines in white Australia in the period of 1697-1973.
