Aberdare railway station the terminus of rail services on the Aberdare branch of the Merthyr Line. In 1964, passenger rail services ceased but the line remained open for coal trains serving Tower Colliery, a short distance north of Aberdare town. The fact that the line remained open made it possible to reinstate passenger services, which started again in 1988. Freight still continues to the colliery, several times a day. This stretch of line is owned by the colliery.
Amongst other stations on the Merthyr Line, Aberdare Railway Station has undergone construction work to lengthen the platform. This now allows four carriage trains to stop at the station. The platform also has a ticket sales box and a telephone. A rail link is available at the station, taking passengers to Hirwaun. Car parking is provided at the station.
