Abdul Wahid Pedersen

Abdul Wahid Pedersen (b. 1954) is a Dane who converted to Islam and changed his name and is now a Danish Imam. He is very involved in debates regarding Islam in Denmark.

Embraced Islam in 1982 after a long search through differend World religions. Was brought up as a Christian, became a free-thinker at the age of 16 and was a follower of Hindu religion for four years before eventually landing on Islam.

- Vice President of Muslims in Dialogue, which is a Danish Muslim organization promoting Islam into the Danish society, not being a mono-ethnic based organization working on upholding Muslims' traditions from third country. - Co-founder and principal of three private schools for Muslim children in Denmark. - Co-founder and many years vice chairman of Islamic Christian Study Center in Copenhagen. - Founder and Secretary General of ISRA (Independent Scandinavian Relief Agency, founded in 1988) in Denmark, which was closed down due to false allegations on supporting terrorism in late 2004. Spearheaded relief projects in numerous countries worldwide. E.g. the establishing of a school in the Kunar province of Afghanistan, in which even girls were educated throughout the Taliban regime of that country. - Co-founder of Danish Muslim Aid and presently Secretary General of same organization. DM-Aid has, among other things, rebuilt more than 500 homes for earth quake stricken people in Kashmir area of Pakistan during the winter 2005 - 2006 (www.dm-aid.dk) - The first imam to start holding Friday khutbah (sermon) in Danish. Started this activity in 1997 and has continued ever since. - Translator of a number of books on Islam into Danish language. - A well known lecturer on Islam, integration and relief issues in Denmark - One of the European representatives of the Global Network of Religions for Children - Board member of Swedish Islamic Academy
