Abdul Sattar Jawad

Born in April 10, 1943 in Baghdad, Iraq, Abdul Sattar Jawad is a research professor in the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies at Duke University. He received a Ph.D in English Literature and Journalism, London's City University (UK) . Apart from teaching Arabic literature and expert on the works of T.S. Eliot and William Shakespeare, and on Iraqi media and academia, he authored 14 books on Literature and Media and edited some literary magazines, and newspapers in English and Arabic. Before coming to Duke, he was a professor at Mustansiriya University in Baghdad and edited the Baghdad Mirror.

During the years following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there was claimed to be a systematic campaign to eliminate Iraqi academia. Several of his colleagues were killed and Abdul Sattar Jawad fled to the United States following the US invasion; he now teaches at Duke University
