A Thousand Deaths

"A Thousand Deaths" is a short story by Orson Scott Card in his collection Maps in a Mirror. It was first published in the December 1978 Omni.
"A Thousand Deaths" occurs in an alternate, post-cold war timeline. The U.S.S.R. won and the United States is now under their control. Jerry Cove is the story's protagonist. He has been convicted of treason and is put to death by every available method until he convincingly apologizes. The basis of the story is that the instant he dies all his memories up to and including the moment of death are put into a clone of himself. This allows Jerry to be killed over and over again, a thousand deaths. This book introduces the sleeping drug Somec which is used in The Worthing Saga.
This story (along with the story "Kingsmeat") earned Card a reputation for cruelty and gruesomeness. [citation needed]
A Thousand Deaths is also a short story by Jack London.
