A State of Trance (often abbreviated as ASoT) is the title of a weekly radio show hosted by popular trance DJ Armin van Buuren. It first aired in March 2001 on ID&T Radio (the predecessor of Slam!FM). The show takes the format of a two hour mix set in which he plays new promo tracks and latest releases in the trance genre of electronic music. Selected tracks are announced during the show helping to promote new artists and releases. This radio-show/website combination has proven popular internationally, as fans - while listening to the radio-show - will converse in the website chat-rooms and forums, such as DI.FM, over the playing tracks. The show attracts more than 700,000 people each week from around the world to tune in to the mix.

[edit] Progression of A State of Trance

It has grown very large from its small beginnings in Holland. As Armin kept playing hit Trance tunes, it obviously attracted more people. Armin did not look at the show from a personal level, rather from a professional level. By using a track from an artist and broadcasting it on his show, he is giving credit to the artist at a professional level. He is projecting that the track sounds very well done to him, and he broadcasts it to his fans because he is sure that the majority of them will enjoy the tune. As the listener count became larger and larger, Armin had larger and larger parties to celebrate A State of Trance. He began with special guests such as DJ Lange and DJ Ben Lost. Later, he had people like Markus Schulz and Rank 1 performing on his show. Recently, he broadcasted his largest gig yet for A State of Trance episode 250, a special 8 1/2 hour mix with 5 seasoned DJs, catching the attention of over 1.5 million people from around the world. In A State of Trance Episode 262, Armin announced that ten people would be selected to receive the boxed set of the A State of Trance Classics album that Armin had released. He announced the winners in Episode 264. Recently, as of Episode 265, Armin has been answering e-mails from fans of his show. DI.FM hosts Armin's show every week for On Demand listening at anytime. Immediately after the mix is played live on Thursday, DI.FM uploads a new playlist file so that one can listen to the most recent episode again and again until next week's show airs. You can find the playlist at DI.FM OnDemand. The playlist for non-subscribers only runs at a 32 kb/s bitrate (low quality), while the premium version runs at 128 kb/s. Although quality is a compromise, at least you can listen to it whenever you want.

Armin has made it clear to everyone that in his view it is all about the music. Therefore, every so often, he has invited top DJs to come and play at various clubs for his A State of Trance. If you subscribe to Armada's A State of Trance package, you can download all of the ASOTs that have ever been broadcasted. The fee for the service is €35 (approx. $44) for a one year subscription. The information for getting these episodes can be found at Armada's website .

[edit] Unique Features of A State of Trance

A State of Trance stands out from some other Trance radio shows by selecting two songs each time, the Tune of the Week and the Future Favorite. For the Future Favorite, Armin allows fans to select the tune that they enjoyed the most in the previous episode of the show. The one that acquires the most votes becomes the Future Favorite of the upcoming episode. This tune is approximately the tune that everyone enjoyed the most of the last show. This process is done for every episode of A State of Trance. If you want to vote for your future favorite, go to Trance.nu and vote there. This is similar to Trance Around The World with Above & Beyond where they have a self selected "Record Of The Week" and a listener voted "Web Vote Winner" from the previous show, voted for on their web site.

The Tune of the Week works a bit differently. Armin selects a tune that he finds to be personally the best tune that he has acquired so far that week. The Tune of the Week is included in the Future Favorite voting polls.

Armin van Buuren has also been releasing double-CD trance compilations with 'A State of Trance' in their titles.
