Podiacide: A New Word is Coined

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Podiacide" is a word describing the act of "shooting oneself in the foot" (a contraction of podiatry and suicide). Podiacide was coined by Colonel Gene S. Bartlow, USAF-Ret. in an article published in "Association Trends", page 4, No. 1020, Oct. 15, 1993, structured as a word to describe an act of self-inflicted stupidity that is normally preventable. Perhaps the most significant act of podicide was President Nixon's failure to burn the Oval Office audio tapes on the White House lawn. One could also use podiacide to describe ex-DC-Mayor Marion Barry's use of crack with Ms. Rasheeda Moore in a Washington hotel room. A recent example of podiacide was when Michael Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld", exploded in an angry racist tirade as he performed onstage at a comedy club in West Hollywood last November, 2006, which was a preventable act of stupidity resulting serious damage to his career. Podiacide may be considered an aphorism, a terse phrase, word, or saying embodying a general truth. You can readily see acts of podicide committed mostly by politicians and celebrities almost daily in your newspaper and on national television.
