[edit] A Kingdom begins

True Heart Bear and Noble Heart Horse are caretakers of the young Care Bears and Care Bear Cousins aboard the Cloud Clipper. As they are sailing along, a storm starts, and a red dragon blocks them in their way. But then, both True and Noble are saved by a rainbow that takes them up to the sky, where, assisted by the Great Wishing Star, they begin the Kingdom of Caring. As the ship goes up to the sky, the dragon yells at them to beware of him for he is really a demonic, shape-shifting entity named Dark Heart.

As a reward for rescuing the orphan Cubs, the Great Wishing Star gives True and Noble their tummy symbols: True Heart is given a multi-coloured star radiating from a central heart, and Noble Heart a multi-coloured heart radiating from a central star.

[edit] At camp

For the Care Bear Family's first mission, some time later, True Heart Bear skydives all the way to Earth, accompanied by baby stowaway Swift Heart Rabbit. She lands via parachute at a campsite where she encounters three children finishing a race: Christy, Dawn and John. A disappointed and rebellious Christy feels she cannot do anything as well as her lead competitor, the boastful Camp Champ. (She has only fared better at marbles.)

As a solution, she attempts to run away from her troubles at camp, and Dawn and John follow her likewise. But Christy's comrades end up being a little lost, until True Heart (with Swift Heart inside her bag) invites them both to come and take care of the babies back at the Kingdom of Caring. Meanwhile, Noble Heart is having a hard time trying to do so all by himself.

[edit] Babysitting

When True Heart and the two campers come at the Kingdom of Caring, True Heart announces her return to Earth to help Christy. A bell tolls from the Caring Meter; she and Noble Heart suggest that Dark Heart (the dragon they faced earlier on) has returned, and they will both try to defeat him again should he really strike once more.

Dawn and John should never find out who he is, the two declare, and they insist that their human friends now baby-sit the orphan Cubs.

[edit] Dark Heart

Back on Earth, Christy meets Dark Heart (disguised in his human form), whom she falls unwittingly a victim to, and is later used by the villain as a tool to help him take out his evil deeds and destroy the Kingdom of Caring. When the two first meet, the humanoid Dark Heart gives his apprentice the opportunity to do what she never could do before, even cartwheels. A favour is expected from Christy the next time he returns, he tells her before he leaves.

Then, Dawn and John come back and tell Christy about their baby-sitting job up above. In addition, they tell her that, no matter what, they are already champs as well as real friends.

To save the Care Bear Family from their future villain, True and Noble move the Cubs to two new places: growing up, the Bears will reside in Care-a-lot and the Cousins will live in the Forest of Feelings.

Meanwhile, without the Bears knowing it, Dark Heart is planning to capture the whole Family, from within his secret cave beneath the camp, located inside an outhouse at the site.

As he speeds off to Care-a-lot, Christy is showing off her new winning abilities before the other campers, posing as the new "Camp Champ".

[edit] Surprise?

Meanwhile, the Care Bear Family is planning a surprise party to welcome True and Noble home from another mission. But then, the Caring Meter goes awry, and that is when Dark Heart stops by—first to check on their Meter and instead ruin it, then play games to try and capture them. The Care Bears believe he's trying to have fun but the Star and Heart Buddies are aware of his plan. As he attempts to capture the Care Bears and Cousins, Dark Heart is repeatedly driven off by the Star and Heart Buddies. Not looking where he's going, Dark Heart falls down a slide and is launched off a seesaw into the Care-a-Lot Castle. He lands on the punch bowl and rides it out the door where he comes to a crashing halt. The Care Bears and Cousins examine him afterwards, one of them suggesting they give him a big hug. Reacting to that remark, Dark Heart gets up and morphs into his true form: a raging red cloud with glaring pink eyes, scaring the living daylights out of the gang.

After Dark Heart has gone away, thanks to the Stare, True and Noble let the other Family members take care of caring while they are both gone to search for the villain. The Family has never been that busy before.

[edit] Trouble is brewing

At camp, Christy is still showing off when Dark Heart asks her to repay his favour: to capture every single Care Bear inside his magic red bag, and forever trap them all in some secret place.

Meanwhile, the remaining Care Bear Family spots some trouble at camp: Christy in a canoe without paddles in a lake. They come down to Earth to her rescue, but Dark Heart thwarts their operation, and soon takes some of the Bears along with him. Tenderheart, Brave Heart and Grumpy figure out that Dark Heart has made the Family disappear that way, and Christy has partnered with the villain. Tenderheart insists a conference be held inside the Hall of Hearts with the remaining Cousins.

In the canoe, Dark Heart tells her that he will leave her alone once he captures every Bear and Cousin, save True and Noble (who are both chasing his shadow instead of the real him). But then he falls off as he is talking and Christy goes into the lake to save him. When she tells him afterwards that he is still a person, good or bad, Dark Heart refuses to take heed and takes her to another side of the lake.

Christy's friends, Dawn and John, are witnessing a change of heart all over the campsite. Even worse, a moose attacks them furiously, and Friend and Secret Bear help the two of them in time. Friend Bear uses her Stare on the moose and Secret Bear imitates mating calls. Both, in turn, save the animal from Dark Heart.

Then both Bears call Dawn and John over to their Cloud Car, and the four of them head over to the ongoing conference.

Right at this moment, there are so few of the Family members left, all thanks to the alliance of Christy and Dark Heart. Upon the arrival of Christy's friends and their saviours, the Family, Cheer Bear included, finds new hope in getting rid of their villain.

[edit] Trapped

Later that night, as the remaining Family and their human friends come back, Dark Heart's influence makes the campers ruin the entire place. Dawn and John help save their fellow camper, while the Family looks for their lost members inside Dark Heart's cave.

Meanwhile, True and Noble are still chasing the villain in an unknown place, only to find out that they have found his shadow, and he has tricked them into leaving the Bears and Cousins alone. Already, without them knowing it, they are too late.

As the Bears and Cousins continue searching, Dark Heart himself catches them. Soon after he captures them in cages, he hiccups tiredly and changes into an alligator, a gorilla, a turtle and back to an alligator again before disappearing.

[edit] Friends in need

Finding Christy, Dawn and John tell her that, with their help, things will be back to normal soon, once they convince Dark Heart to stop hurting the Care Bear Family. But she refuses their offer; it has been too late for her to get back to what she was before. Only when she reveals the damage she has done with her villain has she finally paid him back. All three, as friends, set off to rescue the Family.

Tenderheart, Grumpy and Brave Heart's only chance for escape lies in Dark Heart's key, and now it is on the horn of the villain, who is in rhino form. No sooner do they almost get it, than he changes into a frog, then a viper, then as the cloud, and returns into his human self. As soon as the other Bears and Cousins disappear inside big rubies, the three campers have only arrived to see the Family's fate. So do the last Bear and Cousin: True Heart Bear and Noble Heart Horse. But, for Christy, her bargain with Dark Heart has ended, thus making it hard to put his wrath to an end. She insists Dark Heart free the Family out of their prison, and at once he takes away her abilities for good.

Still, because Christy saved him earlier, he warns her to "Run and save herself" from the evil he is about to do. In an attempt to save everyone else, True and Noble use their Stare once more on his cloud, but while they do so, Christy is struck by a bolt of lightning coming from it.

Using her marble-throwing skills, Christy lets down the chandelier with the rubies imprisoning the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins. After it crashes down, all of them return in action, joining True and Noble in the Stare.

As Dark Heart continues to rain down lightning, he suddenly notices that Christy has been hit and now lies motionless. Dark Heart's rage stops, and, transforming himself into a boy for the last time, he comes down to her, remorseful for what he has done. He implores the Care Bears to help "...bring her back from where I (he) sent her!", but they believe that there is nothing they can do.

Dark Heart grows angry, asking them what good all their love and caring is if it can't save Christy. The bears listen, and implore anyone (presumable the audience) who cares to chant "I care!" with them. Soon, Dark Heart himself chants as well.

Some time later, Christy is brought back to life, but cheers from the group are short-lived. Within a few moments, the quickly-collapsing cave is rid of all its bad reputation and vanishes altogether before turning back into an outhouse.

Overjoyed by the change of their new friend, who once was Dark Heart, everybody runs over to the lake to have a good time with him. It is unsure how much time has actually passed since he changed, but they have all donned swimming clothes.

In the end, the Care Bears leave for their home, and the former Dark Heart says he wants to help make the camp a fairer and better place for campers. The kids then walk off (John and Dawn together and Dark Heart and Christy together) toward a camp fire, where other campers sit having fun.

[edit] Epilogue / Forever Young

The following evening, John, Dawn, Christy and the former Dark Heart say good-bye to Care-a-lot's citizens, knowing the importance of friendship and being a "Camp Champ" when it comes to being a friend.

After the Great Wishing Star's last lines, which tell the film's audience that they are world-class Care Bear "Champs", flashbacks of the Care Bear Family's childhood are seen amid the rainbow colours of the Kingdom of Caring's fountain, while "Forever Young" plays in the background.
