A Man Named Dave, (ISBN 0-452-28190-3) the third installment of Dave Pelzer's life, tells the story of Dave Pelzer struggling to get money and survive in the sociality and how he tries to overcome his memories being abused as a child. The book starts with the memory of the last day of abuse with his mother on March 4, 1973, where he describes being hit in the throat with a broom, pushed down steps and choked, before being rescued on March 5, 1973. In the book, Pelzer struggled to get his first two books, A Child Called It and The Lost Boy published, and to sustain his first marriage, which eventually was broken. Pelzer describes how his mother has not yet "changed", and how he is understanding how she never will. He also describes joining the Air Force and about his father's battle and death with terminal cancer. He marries an editor and finally makes peace with his mother in the end.
A Man Named Dave was included as the third book in Dave Pelzer's compilation, My Story.
