A Kind of Magic is a pop rock song written by Roger Taylor for the film Highlander, for which Queen wrote the music. The phrase "a kind of magic" is actually used in the film by Christopher Lambert and impressed Taylor so much that he made it into a full song. There are references to the film in the lyrics - "one prize, one goal"; "no mortal man".
Queen recorded the song intended for the final title sequence of the film with a rock mix, and later Freddie Mercury re-mixed it for the album A Kind Of Magic, making it more of a pop song rather than the rockier version heard in the film.
The song was a Top 10 hit in the UK in 1986 and was a live favourite on the tour of the same year, which proved to be Queen's last with the original foursome.
Notable is that guitarist Brian May didn't use his famous Red Special guitar in the music video, instead he used a 1984 copy.
Also notable is that it is the band's first ever title track.
