Best Friends for Never: A Clique Novel is the second book of The Clique Series. It was written by Lisi Harrison who was a head writer for MTV Production.

[edit] Plot summary
One night, Alicia Rivera, Massie Block's gossip master calls Massie to tell her that some girls at OCD (Becca Wilder and Liz Goldman) think she is "slipping" and "doesn't seem as in charge". Alicia also says that Becca and Liz are planning to throw OCD's first boy/girl party. Massie decides to beat them to it. Massie tells Claire that if she helps her mom to agree to throw a party Massie will help her get a cell phone. Kendra Block agrees, but only if they co-host the party. They let Landon Dorsey plan it and the theme is "When Hell Freezes Over".

Also on the same night, Massie and Claire make a bet: Massie can't go shopping for a month and Claire can't wear the same thing twice in a month. The loser has to wear Massie's old snowsuit to school for a week. Both struggle with the bet. In the end, they call off the bet.
[edit] Costume controversy
The Pretty Committee decides to wear matching (and revealing) Dirty Devil costumes and Kendra makes Massie include Claire in these plans. The girls wear them to school, but Massie intentionally leaves Claire's costume at home that day, telling her mother it was an accident. Girls all over school try to copy TPC and cut their shirts. As a result, one girl accidentally cuts herself. Principal Burns finds out about their costumes and make them wear something from the Lost & Found.
Because they got in trouble for their costumes, Kristen's strict parents won't let her go to the Halloween party. Kristen and Dylan find out they like the same boy (Derrick "Derrington" Harrington) and since Kristen wasn't permitted to go to the party, Dylan takes advantage of that and flirts with Derrington. But the boy Massie secretly had a crush on was Cam Fisher. She doesn't reveal this to any of her friends. Alicia meets Olivia Ryan, who said she was "super sick" all semester but really had a nose job. Alicia is friendly with Olivia but she is scorned upon by Massie and Dylan for being ditzy.
[edit] Punk rock weirdos
Massie also helped Claire and Layne meet some boys, two punk-rock weirdos who wear too much make up. Layne and Eli hit it off immediately, but Claire didn't connect with Tristan. When she is starting to get very bored at the party, she meets Cam Fisher while he is running away from Olivia and Alicia. They win a dance contest together and Claire gives Cam her prize, an iTunes gift certificate. He promises to burn her a CD.
After the party they find out at school that they are being forced to wear uniforms because of Massie's Dirty Devil costumes. Massie, not in favour of the uniforms, goes to Pia Vogel, the fashion director and asks if she can design the uniforms. Pia says no to Massie's proposal but she does agree to the school holding a uniform design contest. Claire and Massie work on their uniforms, and Massie decides to put their designs in trash bags when they're not working on them so they don't peek at each other's. When Inez, the housekeeper mistakenly throws them out because she thought they were trash, Massie and Claire decide to call off their bet and work with each other and Kristen and Dylan. Alicia and Olivia work together.
[edit] The contest
At the contest the next day, Alicia and Olivia are in the finals with Massie and Claire. When they vote, Massie paints her thimble purple (her favourite colour) for good luck. When the results are in, Alicia and Olivia have 136 thimbles and Massie, Claire, Kristen and Dylan have 102. They take a closer look and found out that the purple thimble was in Alicia and Olivia's box. They had cheated by switching the boxes. Massie decides to take revenge later. She tells them to "lie in the weeds" like animals do before they pounce.
At the end of the book, Claire is finally in the Pretty Committee.
