A590 road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A590 is a trunk road in southern Cumbria, in the north-west of England, running from M6 junction 36, through the towns of Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness to terminate at Vickerstown on Walney Island. The road is a mixture of dual carriageway and single carriageway, with the section from the M6 to Low Newton being mainly dual. Further dual sections are south of Newby Bridge, south of Greenodd and south of Ulverston. The road is the main route for tourists entering the southern Lake District.

[edit] Original Route
Prior to the construction of the dualled section from the M6, the A590 used to begin off the single carriageway A6 road near Levens. Even after the construction of the dual carriageway section from the M6, the A590 used to begin at a grade separated roundabout with the A591 close to Sizergh Castle, with the dual carriageway having the A591 number. In the 1990s, the decision was made to rename the road from M6 junction 36 to the A590/A591 roundabout 'A590'. This was beneficial in giving one continuous road number from the M6 to Barrow-in-Furness, but means that drivers must turn off in order to stay on the A590, at its junction with the A591.
[edit] By-passes
The A590 used to run through the villages of Lindale (now the B5277 and B5271), Backbarrow, Haverthwaite, Greenodd (the junction of the A5092), and the town of Dalton-in-Furness (the junction of the A595); now all by-passed.
[edit] Improvements
In order to improve the A590, a new dual carriageway bypass of High Newton and Low Newton was proposed, and was added to the government's Targeted Programme of Improvements. The bypass will be 2.4 miles (3.8 kilometres) long, and take traffic away from the current congested route through the two villages, which currently has to carry up to 14,000 vehicles per day. Construction began in June 2006, and is due for completion in 2008. In addition to this bypass, the whole of the A590 from Lindale to Barrow may be considered for dualling [citation needed].
