86th Street is a station on the BMT Fourth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Served at all times by the R train, it is located at 86th Street and Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and serves the 86th Street shopping area for Bay Ridge and Fort Hamilton.
There are two tracks and a single island platform. The principal entrance, at the south end of the station, is from 86th Street and Fourth Avenue. Stairs lead down to a fare control area and mezzanine, which has historically had a modest retail space (used for a grocery/department store as of August 2006). An additional entrance is located at the station's north end, at 85th Street.
Close inspection of the station layout reveals that the city built this station with an eye to expanding it to a four-track express station, possibly serving a connection to Staten Island. On rare occasions, doors are open that reveal a vast expanse of additional mezzanine. The present platform is located where the northbound tracks would be.
