I have noticed a new paragraph recently added to the article, which begins thus: "Some Marxian authors argue, in the tradition of Oskar Lange, that Marx's critics mistake the significance of his value theory, in good part because they operate with a "deformed" notion of prices, price formation, price aggregation, and the real use of prices." I would just like to point out that the prices relevant to the transfotmation problem, and dealt with in the article, are Marx's own prices of production, as defined and used by him in Capital's Volume III. This being so, the added bit on "deformed" prices in the transformation problem looks to me – with all due respect – as entirely nonsensical. Poor Lange cannot now defend himself, but that seems no excuse to libel him. I'll wait a few days, and if nobody provides some counter-argument I'll then delete the paragraph in question. --Mario 22:46, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

As I wrote that, I should perhaps say that you are partly correct insofar as the transformation problem, narrowly conceived, centres only on the production prices. However I think it is a theoretical requirement of solving the problem to specify the relation of values and prices and why the distinction between them is relevant, rather than an unnecessary detour. To point up there is an issue there, I referred to the fact that the majority of assets in an economy have no actual market price sinve they are not being traded. I do not recall what Lange said about the transformation problem, but I do know he was critical of neo-classical price theory (having studied the experience of "administered prices" in a Soviet-type economy). Lange embodied a very healthy research programme I think insofar as he tried to synthesize the insights of classical political economy and neo-classical economics in an intelligent way. There is no "libel" involved here, merely a continued insistence about the inescapable reference to values beyond prices. I have no objection if you cut that bit out if it is irrelevant to your transformation problem, and I will try to write up another version of the transformation problem from a Marxian point of view when I get time (maybe less exciting insofar as it doesn't have beavers and deer in it, though maybe I could introduce pigs and parrots - I am a bit busy though with other work stuff right now). Meantime I can only suggest that, if interested, you have a read of chapter 7 Prof. Makoto Itoh's book The Basic Theory of Capitalism which I think succinctly sums up the story so far. --User:Jurriaan
