Why is Jedidiah Strutt worth an encyclopedia article? All that we have so far is a geneaology listing - did he do something notable? - DavidWBrooks 20:18, 6 May 2004 (UTC)

Jedidiah Strutt was one of the key contributors to Belper's place in the Industrial Revolution. Strutt invented an attachment to Lee's Stocking Frame, this attachment was called "The Derby Rib Attachment", thus enabeling ribbed hose to be made. The Patents taken out in 1758 No. 722 and 1759 No 734 secured his invention. At this time Strutt was in Partnership with his brother in Law William Woollatt. It was about this time that Jedediah Strutt moved from his small farm at Blackwell, Derbyshire to Derby and an additional partner Mr. Samuel Need of Nottingham taken into partnership. Strutt had made his money and with Need was able to finance Richard Arkwright. Their first cotton spinning mill was built in Nottingham in 1770 driven by horse power. This was not successful and so the Water Powered Mill at Cromford was built 1771. Jedediah Strutt, built the first of his four Mills in Belper 1775 and Milford (Derbyshire) 1780,he financed these himself and Arkwright had no interest in them. Strutt also built housing in Belper and Milford is all Strutt Built. All the housing can be seen today. Most of the Mills were demolished 1959-1965, However the 1803 North Mill is still standing in Belper. There is one mill still in Milford.

Jedidiah Strutt was the father of a dynasty of Strutts who were largely responsible for the development of the cotton spinning and silk industry in Derby and Belper. His son William (1756-1830), was an inventor and designed the Heating System at the Original Derby Royal Infirmary. Built the North Mill in Belper(1804)being Iron Framed and Fire Proof. George Benson (1761-1841) ran the Cotton Mills at Belper & Milford, Joseph (1765-1844)founded the Lancastrian School in Derby. He presented the Derby Arboretum to that town, this was the first puplic park in the country. The Strutts Mills are now part of a World Heritage Site. The North Mill is a Visitor Center here you can see an original Arkwright Water Farme. The current Lord Belper is a direct decendant of Jedidiah Strutt, via his son William (1756-1830)
