The elf connection is mentioned in the article itself - I don't feel it really belongs in the lead. It's a somewhat vague thing and the lead should contain the most important facts. - Haukur 22:50, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Do not Omit Historical Belief.
As I put in my last edit, It is one of his(Freyr) main titles, and to not make mention of it would be denying Norse legend it's property. I am not just a random passer-by, I am very familiar with Nordic religion and Mythology. It was mentioned before and in many other descriptions of Freyr in several other sources. Please do not take it out of mention, this is very important topic to many.
- The Poetic Edda passage which says that the gods gave Álfheimr to Freyr is quoted in the article. I don't see inferring from that that Freyr is "lord of the elves of light" as warranted.
- If you want to quote a source in support of this position then please do so. - Haukur 23:30, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Álfar (singular: álfr) is the Old Norse word for elves. Álfar figure in Norse mythology. Snorri Sturluson in the Younger Edda differentiate between ljósálfar (light-elves) and dökkálfar (dark-elves). The light-elves live in Álfheimr.
- Indeed. And from this it is not unreasonable to assume that Freyr was the ruler of the elves but it's never explicitly said so I don't think it should be categorically stated in the lead of the Freyr article. - Haukur 00:00, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] From my point of view.
The Alfar play(ed) a very large role in Nordic religion and Paganism many years ago. The Temple at Uppsala as you know was built by Freyr(Yngvi), and was home to the largest known cult to worship Freyr. Many rituals and ceremonies were held there several of which were directly aimed at the Alfar. One of these Rituals is called a Midwinter Blot(The Blót was the pagan Germanic sacrifice to Norse gods and elves. The word is related to the English word bless and they are derived from blood, an important component in the rites.) The elves are not pointy eared tree dwellers that shoot bows and arrows, as is the popular belief today. They are divine beings, much like an angel in Christian belief and are not to be taken lightly. I guess what I'm trying to get at is, to many people(including myself, a "pagan") these beliefs and rituals are still practiced and upheld to this day. Even if you don't believe it, many people do, and History provides lots of evidence in my favor. To exclude something as important as Alfheim and it's inhabitants as being ruled by Freyr would be the equivalent of omitting that god is ruler of heaven and the angels in Christianity.
- No-one wants to exclude Álfheimr or any of the other things you mention. The strophe linking Freyr to Álfheimr is quoted in full in the Freyr article. The Álfar also have their own article. So does Álfheimr. So does the Temple at Uppsala. So does blót. All those things are important and should be treated in the appropriate places.
- The only thing I'm saying is that it is not completely clear from the ancient sources that Freyr was the ruler of the Álfar. And the issue is not of such central importance that it needs to be addressed in the lead of the article. - Haukur 01:42, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Who made you the expert on Freyr? Leave his legacy up to those whom it matters to. Now you have convinced me to make more changes since it makes more difference to me and my kind. It is very important that people know these things about him. Refer back to my original post on this page! It is a very well known part of Norse Legend that he is, so STOP Omitting it!
- Please don't go for an argument from authority. I am not trying to hide any information on Freyr. I wrote most of the current article and I'm still working on expanding it. Anyone is, of course, free to help. - Haukur 16:22, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
Most people, will not read past the first paragraph, so there needs to be as much imformation as possible there and as much in a summary about him! Even if it is repetitive.
- The lead can be expanded a bit, certainly, but we shouldn't state anything there which isn't 100% clear from the original sources. - Haukur 16:41, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
All the things mentioned there are 100%.
