[edit] Skipanon River

Hi. I can see you have put a lot of work into the Skipanon River, but I'm afraid it appears to be a copyright violation. You might want to take a look at Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ. Basically, everything you see on the web should be presumed to be copyrighted unless it specifically says it's not-- it doesn't need a copyright notice. The facts aren't copyrighted, but the expression is. You need to completely rewrite it in your own words; otherwise, I'm afraid I'll have to take the article back to where it was when you started.

Of course, if I'm wrong, and the source really is public domain, please let me know ASAP. Thanks, Mwanner | Talk 13:56, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

OK, I reverted it to the last version without copyright violations. You can always pull your version back and work on it-- if you don't know how, let me know and I'll help. Cheers! -- Mwanner | Talk 20:23, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Links

This link is broken:

Do you know why?

These links to not releate DIRECTLY to the article:

External links need to be directly about the article, internal links can go to subject like these, and then have an externl link.

Hello WikiDon,

Broken link: Newbie webmaster at site. Will try correct.

[edit] Tributaries of the Columbia River

"...to the mouth at and beyond"

How can you go beyond the mouth of a river? You can't, then it would not be a tributary of that river. You can go in the mouth to the ocean, but not BEYOND.

Hello WikiDon,

Just love English, read that way you did, it was wrong. Your correction is much better. 71.111.146.208

[edit] Copy violation question

You wrote:

1) State of Oregon ODFW and DEQ reports (no copyrights listed, paid for and published with public monies, re-printed with no copyright listings in Oregonian and other local newspapers all the time).

2) Lewis & Clark journal entires. Created in 1805 (200 years ago) and reprinted in the 1820's. A bit out of even the new copyright time periods.

3) Oregon Pioneer interviews from the turn of the 19th century, in public domain.

4) OSPRIG public press release - no copyright (http://ospirg.org/OR.asp?id2=17753&id3=OR), reprinted in newspapers. If copyrighted, OSPRIG would love data to be re-printed.

5) Skipanon Watershed report text. As land owner and part of the Skipanon Watershed, I can assure you these are okay to use.

OK. You're right about #2 and #3, no problem. But you might have to do some legwork (well, email work) to get to keep the rest. Under current copyright law, any published text is automatically copyrighted, and no copyright notice is required. An author has to take an active step to avoid copyright-- explicitly placing the work in the public domain, or licencing it under a GFDL or equivalent licence. So for sources #1, #4 and #5, you would need to get something in writing from them releasing the text for use on Wikipedia and reuse by any of our mirror sites. My guess is, you'd have mixed results at best. I need to do some hunting to find just what you would need-- I'll try to get to it tomorrow.

But, understand, it is the language that you have used from these sources that is a problem (as per above), but the facts aren't. If you rewrite the material in your own words, you're home free-- no copyright issues at all. That's what I would recommend-- you'd probably end up with a better article, and you'd be bound to learn something in doing it (and improve your writing skills while you're at it). But either approach is OK. I'll get you more info tomorrow. Meanwhile, you might want to look at Wikipedia:Copyrights, Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ and if you want more, any of the articles in Category:Copyright law. Or better still, ignore all that and start the rewrite.

Cheers! (and I'm sorry to jump all over your first major effort here. Don't feel bad-- a lot of us have made the assumptions you're making when we started out here.) -- Mwanner | Talk 03:31, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

OK, the page I promised was Wikipedia:Confirmation of permission, though it looks to me as if the first See also link on that page, Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission gets into it more completely with the whole licence mess. Good luck, let me know if you need help. By the way, if it starts to look like this is going to take a while (more than a week?) it might be better to move this to a non-public page where you can still work on it. Have fun. -- Mwanner | Talk 23:01, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Return to non-copyvio version

Since you have not resolved the issues we discussed 11 days ago, I have returned the Skipanon article to it's earlier state. Let me know if you want to work on it again. -- Mwanner | [[User talk:Mwanner|Talk]] 19:57, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
