[edit] History

[edit] Once upon a time...

In 2003, disparate souls converged over a kindred musical spirit and 5th PROJEKT materialized with their offering of idyllic, cinematic rock. Originally composed of Tara Rice (vocalist, guitarist, programming, songwriter), Sködt D. McNalty (guitarist, vocalist, programming, songwriter), Peter Broadley (bassist) and Nathan Kaye (percussionist, drummer), the ensemble has "effectively evaded both classification and comparison." [1] "There's no doubt that 5th PROJEKT's music is nothing if not eclectic... Credit the bandmates' varied tastes (and those of their parents) for informing this variety. 'Pretty much everybody in the band had musicians for parents, and that has really helped to shape our sound,' says Rice. 'Some of them listen to country and folk, others listen to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. 'We literally have thousands of albums and hundreds of genres from which to draw from. But when it comes down to it, we're not all that choosy about the type of music we listen to as long as it's good music."[2]

[edit] Formation

In the cold winter of early 2003, Nathan Kaye (formerly of 3rd Day Induction) & Peter Broadley (formerly of The Leaving Projekt) were approached by former bandmate Sködt D. McNalty about forming 5th PROJEKT. "On the whole, 5th Projekt was designed to give a reprise from the male-oriented grunt rock that often inhabits Cancon playlists. 'It's not as if we were 100 per cent opposed to a male vocalist, but, at the same time, there have been so many male rock vocalists throughout the history of music and we weren't interested in contributing to that,' says McNalty." [2] After some material had been written, they started auditioning musicians and vocalists for one half of an annual term. One day in early Autmun, "Tara showed up to a practice on Sködt's birthday. Tara brought music. It was a good day." [3]

[edit] Etymology

On Thursday June 1st, 2006, the following description was published under the FAQ section of their website;

What does '5th Projekt' mean and what happened to the other 4?

Ha ha! There were no other 4.

Section 1(a): 5th PROJEKT: the meaning of the name - 5 represents the sacred feminine. The balance of energy. Esoteric knowledge. Awakening clarity. Catharsis.

Section 1(b): 5th PROJEKT: the meaning of the logo - A visual representation of the organic nature and duality of balance ('5' and 'P' sharing the same letter form). The star represents the power of the mind working creatively with matter (metaphysics), the five elements, the sacred feminine, truth, hopes, dreams and a slight fetish for Jem and the Holograms. Truly outrageous!

[edit] the Tales of Don Quixote

In 2004 members of 5th PROJEKT formed the independent label Organik Rekords to release 5th PROJEKT's first EP DEMOn001 (2004). After national radio support of DEMOn001 and DEMOn002 (2004) on CBC Radio and various college stations, 5th PROJEKT released the collection of their demos as a limited edition hand-made extended EP entitled the Tales of Don Quixote (tToDQ) on May 5th, 2005, 400 years after Miguel de Cervantes' classic was published. tToDQ received support from radio airplay, appearing on various Canadian and American radio charts from June - December of 2005.

As the album began to receive attention, so did its challenege for classification. Although, self-professed pioneers of Neo-Classical Romanticism, the thematic and conceptual context of such an antiquated proclomation left a void in the integral role of the music industries' communicable style or genre description. Context was found however, alluding to the lush and emotive qualitites of the silver screen score; "the four-piece group has a sound that is best described as cinematic; giving new meaning to the term 'mood music,' 5th projekt creates rich atmospheric music that is both evocative and incredibly dramatic. Picture 'bushfires igniting in deserts,' 'landmines, moles and wormholes without sunlight,' and you'll have some idea of what their new album sounds like." [4]

The album was well received by underground press across the country as well for it's creativity, independence and conceptual approach. "Self-produced and self-released on their own Organik Rekords, Don Quixote is a dreamy, wandering album that if personified would believe in ghostly spirits, lucid dreaming, and the power of the mind over the physical." [5] Writer Leo Davidson described tToDQ as "a mish-mash of genres certainly, but there's a stylistic component to the music that links it all together nicely. This album is a genuine treat, full of nuances and subtleties to please the most discriminating music lover." [6] Leign Johnson of Victoria BCs The Martlet touched on the album's themes, "5th Projekt’s 11-song EP, Tales of Don Quixote, invites you to sit speechless in a dark room with candles lit and heavy thoughts about your uncertain but somehow spoken-for identity. Seriously." [1] The album's packaging was taken note of as well. Stated Jaclyn Arndt, "this writer would be willing to buy almost ANY album if its packaging is even just half the fun of 5th Projekt's The Tales of Don Quixote. In a world of digital singles and forgotten cover-art, 5th Projekt have taken the packaging of their extended-EP to heights nearly forgotten in the 21st century." [5]

tToDQ garnered 5th PROJEKT a nomination for Best Alternative Artist from the 2005 Toronto Independent Music Awards and invitations to showcase at the 2005 North by Northeast festival, the 2005 ROCKRGRL Music Festival in Seattle and the 2006 Canadian Music Week festival.
