"4" is the opening song on Aphex Twin's 1996 album Richard D. James Album.
[edit] Musical structure
"4" begins with a quick drum beat with frequent snare rushes and sampled string instruments, then quickly introduces a voice-like synth, which carries the melody. When the drums fall away, the interaction between synths becomes more polyphonic and uses approximate contrary motion. The cycle of drums and melody to synth-against-synth repeats three times during the piece.
Popular internet animator David Firth, made a video for "4" as an experiment with time lapse photography which was filmed mainly at a lake in Doncaster (Lakeside). [1]
