45 class

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These units were built by A.E Goodwin, and have serviced the Main Southern Line in NSW, but have moved to the North and Northwest later on, as with the other Alco units. These locomotives are based on the Alco DL 541 model. These hood units were introduced into service in 1962, and has proved to be quite popular. The SAR (Southern Australian Railways) also has similar units, and are classified as the 600 class.

The locomotives are fitted with a 251C engine, developing 1450kW, the same as the 44 class. Six of these locomotives have been upgraded in the cabs, and reclassified as the 35 class.

The State Rail Heritage locomotive of this class is 4520, which is at the NSW Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere. 4521 is preserved by Dorrigo Steam and Railway Museum.
