37th parallel north
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 37th parallel north is a line of latitude that crosses over the continents of North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The 37th parallel makes up the north-south border between Utah and Arizona, and Colorado and New Mexico respectively. Where it intersects the 109th meridian it forms Four Corners, the only place in the United States that four states touch. It also makes up the northern border of Oklahoma and the southern border of Colorado and Kansas.
Under the Missouri Compromise, it represented the border between slave-holding and free states in the West.
The 37th parallel also passes through these states: California, Nevada, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Virginia.
