2nd Bundesliga (ice hockey)

The 2. Eishockey-Bundesliga (sometimes known as ASSTEL-Bundesliga for sponsorship reasons) is in Germany the second division in the sport of Ice hockey. It is organised by the ice hockey franchises. In the 2005/06 season, it featured 14 teams.

For the first time to the 1973/74 season the second division of German ice-hockey was named the 2nd Bundesliga
[edit] History up until 1994
- 1973/74 up until 1980/81 there was a single conference 2nd Bundesliga
- 1981/82 divided into two conferences: 2nd Bundesliga Süd (south) and Nord (north)
- 1982/83 a single conference Bundesliga
- Starting from 1983/84, it was divided into the 2nd Bundesliga Süd and Nord conferences.

The large number at insolvencies of the Zweitligisten wasin 1994 the reason for the abolition of the 2nd Bundesliga and the introduction of the Deutschen Eishockey-Liga with 18 teams, without promotion and relegation.
As the highest league below the DEL became the 1. Liga with a Nord and Süd conference, which would playoff against the amateur champion.

As the highest underbody to the season 1998/99 a single conference DEB-Liga was created, receiving the name "Bundesliga". The decision for renaming the 1. Liga in "Bundesliga" led to conflicts between the Deutschen Eishockey-Bund and the Deutschen Eishockey-Liga, since the DEL of the opinion was, which would raise designation "Bundesliga" the requirement to represent the highest German play class in the professional ice hockey. For this reason the DEL carries the 1 for the surnames since the season 1998/99 "The 1st Bundesliga", where the "1st" in the logo is particularly emphasized..

Since 1999, the league became again the 2. Bundesliga, which is organized today of the ESBG. As in the DEL the associations must, as of the last season, undergo a strict financial examination. Unfortunately it could not be guaranteed nevertheless so far that all associations always complete the season, so that in the season 2003/04 the SC Riessersee Eishockey-Verwaltungs GmbH was also excluded ice hockey administration GmbH during the season from financial reasons and the EC Bad Nauheim Spielbetriebs GmbH had to step out after the season of financial reasons.
