2 X 4 ("two by four") is the 2nd song from Metallica's 1996 album Load, written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett about unnecessary resort to violence. It is approximately 5:28 in length and the first song from Load to be played live by the band. Hetfield introduced the song in some of the band's live performances with the tongue-in-cheek commentary as "being about a piece of lumber".
According to Kirk Hammett in an interview on Guitar Player, the solo of the song was inspired by jazz trumpet player Chet Baker.
In the chorus of the song, Hetfield sings "I can't hear ya talk to two by four, yeah", which is a metaphor implying that the recipient of the song is about to be hit with a 2x4, a piece of lumber, further evidencing that the song is about a person's impulsive resort to violence.
