2006 Trincomalee massacres is a series of unfolding massacres of minority Tamil civilians in the Trincomalee district of Sri lanka.

The initial incident happened when five(5) Tamil high school students playing by the beach were briefly detained and then shot dead by the members of Special Task Force, a para- military commando unit of the Sri Lankan military. [1].

This was followed up the massacre of seventeen (17) NGO workers in the city of Muttur close to Trincomalee.

[edit] Massacre of students

Initially the Sri Lankan police and the government claimed these students were in-fact LTTE terrorists killed in a premature detonation of a grenade that they were about lob into government troops. [2].

The government claims were contradicted by the results of the local coroner, who said that they were killed by gun shot wound in execution style. [3].

The official inquiry into this incident s still undergoing and STF personnel have been questioned thus far and no progress has been reported in apprehending the culprits [4].

In a further twist to the case, the only witness who came forward is the target of threats to his safety Dr. Manoharan, the father of one of the victims, has been threatened by some elements of the Sri Lankan security forces. Human rights groups have called on the government to provide adequate protection for the doctor[5].

[edit] Massacre of NGO workers

17 NGO workers working for Action Against Hunger a French NGO were shot point blank after the takeover of the town of Muttur by the government forces.[6] Government investigation is still on as to who killed these NGO workers.

Meanwhile, the independent Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission reported that the Sri Lankan Army was responsible for the killings. [7] although currently the government denies it. According to the SLMM, Sri Lankan military is accused of what has been called the most serious attack on humanitarian workers in the world since the bombing of the UN compound in Baghdad in 2003.[8]

[edit] Additional murders of NGO worker

On May 15th, 2006 around 18.15, Jeyaruban Gnanapragasam, a tamil driver for the NGO Norwegian Refugee Council, was shot dead by unknown person(s). Mr Gnanapragasam was shot with seven nine millimeter bullets to the hands, back and head within a high security zone less than 150 meters from an army checkpoint north of Vavuniya. His body was left in the middle of the road, and subsequently dragged to the side of the road by unknown peron(s). The Vavuniya magistrate in charge of the investigation has not been able to get access to any soldier on duty in the area at the time. Another ethnic Tamil Ragunathan Ramalingam, working for World Concern was shot dead by unknown persons[9]

[edit] Murder of fishermen

According to a BBC report, Villagers close to Trincomalee found bodies of three civilians who are fishermen, who were apparently shot and then dumped. Accoring to local Police officials the three fishermen disappeared on November 6, 2006 by unidentified people.[10]
