2006 Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed assassination attempt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2006 Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed assassination attempt was an attempt by a suicide bomber to assassinate the transitional President of Somalia, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.
[edit] Background
Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed was selected by the country's Parliament to lead the country as head of a transitional government in Nairobi, Kenya, in an attempt to end a decade of anarchy.
[edit] The Attempted Assassination
A suicide car bomber smashed his vehicle into the President's convoy outside the National Parliament, killing four of the President's bodyguards and his brother. Six attackers were also killed in the subsequent gun battle. The President's life was most likely saved by the fact that he travelled in the second vehicle in the convoy rather than the front one, a decoy.
[edit] Suspected Culprits
The Islamic Court's militia which had recently taken control of much of the country are suspect, as are other Islamic extremist groups possibly including al-Qaeda.
