1UP.com is a video-game site owned and operated by Ziff Davis Media, the media conglomerate behind popular videogame magazines Computer Gaming World (CGW), Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine (OPM). It is part of the 1UP Network, which includes those magazines as well as 1UP.com, GameVideos.com, GameTab.com, and FileFront.com.

1UP.com does its own original features, news stories, game reviews, and video interviews; it also expands on articles in Computer Gaming World, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine. Unlike older gaming sites like GameSpot, IGN and GameSpy, 1UP.com was built from the beginning to be a community-focused social networking site for gamers. Gamers, editors and game developers can all have profiles, blogs, and friends lists on the site, which are integrated into the editorial content (previews/reviews).

1UP.com hosts special week-long "online cover stories" that present each day a new in-depth feature story, interview with the developers, game screenshot gallery, game video footage, and/or video of the game studio and creators.

[edit] The 1UP Show

Since October 21, 2005, 1UP.com has been host to a weekly video podcast that focuses on various aspects of popular modern gaming (though it occasionally features more obscure references to gaming culture). The 1UP Show began as a low-budget side project created by Jane Pinckard and Ryan O'Donnell (who also write the show) with the support of then Managing Editor Che Chou, though its second season saw the introduction of professionally made video graphics and high quality footage, as well as a theme song.

The show is shot largely in the offices of 1UP and its affiliated magazines, and partly on location at press events and game shows. Its interviews are generally quite informal compared to the more formal talking head style interviews seen at sites such as GameSpot and IGN. Previews and reviews of games are also often featured, as well as in-house debates and discussions on recent developments in the gaming community. Though various episodes of The 1UP Show feature brief segments of scripted skits and humorous segues, the majority of content is off-the-cuff. When The 1UP Show can not make its weekly deadline, it is usually replaced with an alternate video series titled This Is Not The 1UP Show that features its own, less news-related segments such as "Broken Pixels", in which members of the staff are simply filmed playing poorly received video games.

The latest episodes of The 1UP Show (currently in its fourth season) can be downloaded/viewed from their site every Friday, or from podcast managers such as iTunes.

[edit] Season One: October 2005 - December 2005

The first season of The 1UP Show contains 10 episodes, loosely tied together through a series of ongoing skits. Usually, these skits will take place during the cold open of an episode and before the closing title card. Original music for the series was composed by Ryan O'Donnell. Though the show featured an opening title sequence featuring members of the 1UP.com staff, neither the cast nor crew of The 1UP Show were formally credited.

[edit] Season Two: January 2006 - June 2006

Season Two of The 1UP Show saw the introduction of a standard opening credits sequence, accompanied by an original theme song written and performed by Eric Haller and Jane Pinckard. Managing Editor Che Chou left the 1UP.com staff and Ziff Davis early in the season to work under Microsoft to develop an Xbox game. In May, the events of E3 2006 were covered in a 3-part special.

The season features 21 episodes, including the first four episodes of This Is Not The 1UP Show.

Season Two Main Cast:

  • Video Prod. Squad - Mikey Nguyen, Jason Bertrand, Cesar Quintero, Robert Bowen

[edit] Season Three: June 2006 - October 2006

The third season of The 1UP Show began on June 9th, 2006. The series introduced a new summertime opening sequence with an alternate Beach Boys inspired version of the theme song, arranged by Jane Pinckard, Eric Haller, Ryan O'Donnell and Chris Groves. The Tokyo Game Show was featured in September. Near the end of the season, Jane Pinckard left Ziff Davis to work as a conference manager for the Game Developers Conference.

Season Three contains 18 episodes.

[edit] 1UP Yours

Previously the 1UP Podcast, 1UP yours is a weekly internet radio show that takes the form of a discussion among several editors from the 1UP network. The radio show began October 21, 2005 as a weekly news show hosted by Jane Pinckard.

In its current form, the show's hosts are Garnett Lee, Luke Smith, John Davison, Shane Bettenhausen and several other editors from the 1UP network discuss current topics in the video game world. Topics include press announcements, news from gaming conferences, and also discussion of game design. As with The 1UP Show, 1UP Yours has recently become a more complex and organized radio show including regular segments "Whatcha been playing?" and a community segment where they discuss a few questions taken from their official message board.
