- March 3: ratification of the Amsterdam Treaty by the French National Assembly
- March 17: ratification of the Amsterdam Treaty by the Senate
- March 24: a very serious fire in the Mont Blanc Tunnel, there are forty deaths; traffic is stopped for many months.
- August 11: a total solar eclipse occurs on the north of France.
- September 2: Publication of the book of Jean-Marie Guéhenno "L'avenir de la liberté - La démocratie dans la mondialisation", which examines the problems arising from confrontation between the democracy and globalisation
- October 13: Pacte civil de solidarité (a type of civil union) adopted by French Parliament
- December 12: a ship, Erika, breaks up near Penmarc'h spilling 37 000 tons of fuel, causing an oil slick on the Breton, Vendean and Charentaise coasts. Loire-Atlantique is particularly affected.
- December 26 and 28: the storms Lothar and Martin cause heavy damage with winds reaching the 180 km/h. The total damage included more than 90 dead, 6 billion euros paid by the insurers and 10,000 km² of forest devastated.
