Talk:1980s retro movement
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I don't see why you deleted the info on Family Guy, Futurama, Freddy Vs. Jason, or Alien Vs. Predator. I don't like many of them, but nonetheless they all have ties to the 80's.

[edit] Existence?
Even taking into account that it's a stub, this article hardly makes me think that this movement exists or that it's a fad. Some of the examples seem fairly weak, such as mentioning Family Guy and Futurama. References to the 1980s are to be expected (the decade did happen after all). Perhaps more convincing examples include unexpected developments, such as 80s revivals, and specific references to an 80s retro movement. --Mrwojo 03:35, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- [1] infoplease.com's explanation of a retro movement. Although it does actually talk about a retro movement being more refereing to music. Nonetheless, the concept of a retro movement can refer to all things in pop culture. I think it is just when nostagia of a decade becomes popular to the youth culture such as a yo-yo in the 90s, which was actually invented as a toy in the 30s. (Tigerghost 05:09, 3 January 2006 (UTC))
- [2] this article on a website uses it to refer to cars. The term 'retro movement' is used in the 11th paragraph.
[edit] Popularity among people younger than 20
As a member of this demographic myself, I can vouch that many people my age have the same fondness for this era, despite hardly having experienced it. In my area at least, people born around 1987-1990 seem to enjoy 80's culture and music, even though they were a max of 3 years old during the decade. This is backed up by some of the article's own statements, such as the popularity of Napoleon Dynamite. I'll be noting this in the article.--Aleron235 02:18, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] We need...
to distinguish between "Related to..." and "Refers to..."
The song "1985" seems appropriate, but a reference in a single episode of "Spongebob Squarepants" doesn't. Capitan Obvio 02:34, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Eighties theme bars
I have just added to the article mention of a chain of 1980s themed bars that have opened up in various towns in the UK. I wonder however if it violates Wikipedia's rules on commercial links? I have no association with the company that runs these bars (other than having bought drinks in one of the establishments) and it seems appropriate to list them as they are indicative of precisely the kind of retro movement that the article is discussing. -Matthew Humphreys 11:38, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] This article does not need copy-editing
This article does not need copy-editing because there is basically no copy. It is just a huge list. You should think about removing the tag.JenLouise 06:39, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Future of the article
It was clear during the recent AfD that many contributors think the article in its current form is drastically flawed, so I thought it might be useful to try and reach some sort of consensus on what to do with the article. I've edited the opening paragraph and included a couple of citations that were posted during the AfD debate. In general I'm thinking it would be best to try and incorporate the better examples from the current list into a prose article. Some of the other examples are a huge stretch and could be deleted completely, though some stuff could be in a much shorter listing of other examples at the foot of the article. Anyone else have any thoughts? -- Matthew Humphreys 11:22, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- If no one else has any better ideas I will begin to re-arrange the article in the manner I set out above. It would be good to have some assitance though as it may be a time consuming process for a single editor. --Matthew Humphreys 13:58, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Please condense this article
The 1980's has absolutely been revived recently in pop culture and could be considered a movement, but this particular article is unorganized and like someone above said -- is a list, and nothing more. An article defining something like a "movement" should be condensed; provide examples as to HOW the items/events/people/etc mentioned are part of a revival. --Amy 16:52, 3 November 2006 (EST)
[edit] Cherry Picking
It should be noted that movements such as these "cherry pick" what they revive - you don't really see big hair, over the top make-up or power suits back in fashion. PMA 07:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
