• For the first time in the tournament's history the singles events are won by two teenagers - Chang (17 years, 3 months) and Sanchez Vicario (17 years, 6 months).
• Chang became the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam singles event - a record which still stands.
• Sanchez Vicario became the youngest winner of the French Open, a record that was broken the following year by Monica Seles (16 years, 6 months). She also became the first Spaniard to win the women's title.
• The tournament saw the Grand Slam debut of Monica Seles. She reached the semi finals unseeded.
• The loss in the women's final would prove to be Steffi Graf's only Grand Slam defeat in two years. She won eight of the nine Grand Slam tournaments from the 1988 Australian Open - 1990 Australian Open.
• With this victory, Sanchez Vicario became only the seventh woman to win a Grand Slam tournament in the 1980s. The others being Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf and Hana Mandlikova.
